I just left The Mastering Lab, and witnessed my album being mastered by Grammy winning badass Robert Hadley. My music sounded big and beautiful running through this custom designed equipment. And Robert and the owner Doug Sax were so nice. Teddy bear nice. Robert Hadley has mastered albums for Pink Floyd, Leonard Cohen, Ray Charles, Hans Zimmer, Joe Cocker, Stevie Nicks, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Herb Alpert, Natalie Cole, Electric Light Orchestra, Ryan Adams, Korn, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Los Lobos, Carly Simon, Ozomatli, and so many more. And today he is mastering my second album. Life is so sweet and grand today… I am filled with gratitude.
Robert Hadley said that my producer, Jamie Hill, did a near perfect job on the entire album. It was so solid and consistent from song to song that he did not have to do too much to improve the sound. There has been so much positive feedback and energy around the project, we’re very happy behind the scenes. What’s next (besides the much-needed relaxation time) is that we have to listen to the mastered music and make sure that all is exactly how we want it to sound on the entire collection of songs.
Then there will be these phases: the creation of artwork (and there is a lot of artwork), the creation of all the additional literary materials in the album (remember this is not just a music album, it’s a cross-media storytelling project), the manufacturing of the CD, the double-disc vinyl records, and all of the merchandise… I have to also figure out how to perform this album since I added a lot of sound design and instruments to the mix. There are focus groups to be formed, there is a tour strategy to lay out.
There is still a lot of work ahead. And it’s the best kind of work.
